#NBAAGC2019: NBA YLF Lekki Call on Young Lawyers to Push for Inclusion in the Nigerian Bar Association

Spread the love

We of the Young Lawyers Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association heartily welcomes all delegates , especially, young lawyers to this year, 2019 edition of the Annual General Conference. We are of the view that young lawyers should utilise the Annual General Conference to learn, network and on top of it all, push for inclusion and welfare.

The Lekki Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association is a body of legal practitioners, residing and having their practice within the Ikoyi-Victoria Island-Lekki-Ajah-Ibeju Lekki axis of Lagos State. It has submitted its application for full branch status with signatures of 50 lawyers to the National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association. The application is premised on the existence of an High Court Building, lying , being and situate at Addo Road, Ajah, Lekki, Lagos State.

The Young Lawyers’ Forum of the Lekki Forum aims to draw together young lawyers from within the jurisdiction of Lekki Forum to discuss and execute policies that can advance the welfare, professionalism and inclusion of young lawyers within the jurisdiction and nationally. It seeks to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cordiality among young lawyers towards achieving their professional, emotional mental and physiological goals.

The welfare program will be at the fore front of our campaign for young lawyers as it constitutes a break from the old order of tales of horror and woes by young lawyers in the hands of senior lawyers. YLF Lekki Forum will lead the campaign against low pay syndrome in the Bar , to which many young lawyers have become victims of through cruel principals.

The forum is currently working on a welfare program which will soon be unveiled and also be proposing same as a nationwide welfare program to be adopted by each branch of the NBA and will form the basis for the adoption of candidates at the next NBA national elections.

It will also lead the campaign for inclusion of young lawyers in the national body of the Nigerian Bar Association . It is in this light that we call on the Mr.Paul Usoro-led National Executive Committee at its Pre-AGC NEC sitting on Sunday, 25th August, 2019 to consider and approve the application of the Lekki Forum for full branch status, having satisfied all conditions thereto. We also call on the Mr. Paul Usoro SAN-led administration to fulfill its campaign promise to young lawyers by conducting national elections into the National Officers of the YLF National as against selection and appointment, which used to be the order of the day.

We also call for inclusion of representation for young lawyers at the National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association as promised by the Paul Usoro SAN-led administration. We have received with shock the proposed constitutional amendments to the Constitution of the Nigerian Bar Association [2015 as amended]. We are perplexed that apart from the fact that the proposed amendments scrap sensitive national offices of the Nigerian Bar Association, it has no provision for proper representation of young lawyers in the National Executive Committee.

To make matters worst, the proposed amendment is calculated at making the NBA National the exclusive preserve of a very few by restricting the required conditions to qualify for any of the national offices contrary to the campaign promises of the NBA President which one of it was an all inclusive bar. Rather with the newly proposed NBA constitution we are faced with an all exclusive bar.

We will be further worried if the Mr. Paul Usoro-led administration will set the proposed constitutional amendments at the Pre-AGC NEC without proper inputs of branches and opportunity of a substantive NEC wherein it can be robustly debated. We reject such a preemptive move in its entirety.

We will further be worried if the proposed amendments is also placed before the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 29th August, 2019 without proper filtration across the Branches and a robust engagement by a substantive NEC. We hereby give notice that we will be at the vanguard of resistance against such preemptive moves and we call on delegates to both the NEC and AGM as well as observers to resist and reject such moves.

We propose in the alternative that the proposed amendments be properly debated across branches and for a robust debate at the substantive October 2019 NEC. This will offer a window for robust engagement.

We wish all delegates fruitful deliberation and fun time at the Conference. We hereby invite everyone to the Lekki Bar White Party on Wednesday, 28th August, 2019 at Ocean view Club Trojan , Beside Lekki High Court Building, Addo Road, Ajah, Lekki, Lagos State from 9pm till fade. Dress code: White.
