The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has retracted an earlier call to the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhamadu Buhari if he fails sack the Director General of the DSS.

The Association has through its twitter handle @NigBarAssoc call for the commencement of impeachment proceedings against President Buhari over the invasion of a Federal High Court in Abuja by DSS officers in order to re-arrest Omoyele Sowore.

Through its official Twitter page, @NigBarAssoc, the association said a “responsible National Assembly” should pass a resolution requesting the immediate sacking of Bichi.

However, if the President fails to sack Bichi, the NBA said the National Assembly would need to start impeachment proceedings against Buhari.

“The DSS is under the direct control of @MBuhari. A responsible @nassnigeria should pass a resolution requesting the immediate sacking of the DSS DG and other agents found culpable.

“If the President refuses to abide by the same, NASS should commence impeachment proceedings. #SoworeInDanger,” the NBA wrote.

The Association later deleted the tweet when news blogs,  BarristerNG and Punch Newspapers published the story and issued a statement suggesting that the tweet was made by an unauthorized person.

In the retraction, NBA stated that the earlier tweet “does not represent the position of the NBA and was not known to nor mandated by the NBA President.”

The retraction further stated that the official position of the Association can be gleaned from an interview granted by the president of the Association to CHANNELS TV, and in no part of the interview did the NBA involve the National Assembly nor did it call for the impeachment of President Buhari over the DSS invasion.

The Association stated that it “called on the Department to tender an apology to the Nigerian People”.
