NBA Lekki Forum Calls for Expansion of Divisions as Federal High Court Marks 2019/2020 New Legal Year
The Lekki Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association has called for expansion of the Divisions of the Federal High Court as the Court marks her New Legal Year commencing from 16th September, 2019.
This was made known in a press statement issued by Yakubu Eleto Esq. , the Publicity Secretary of the Lekki Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association. The statement expressed congratulations of behalf of the Executive Committee and entire members of the Lekki Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association to the
Acting Honourable Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice John Terhemba Tsoho and the Honourable Judges of the Federal High Court on the dawn of the 2019/2020 New Legal Year.
The statement called on the Honourable Judges of the Federal High Court to utilise the opening of the Federal High Court 35th Annual Judges’ Conference at Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Maitama, Abuja FCT commencing from Tuesday, 17th September, 2019 to reposition the Federal High Court for efficient administration of justice.
The statement expressed the need to create specialised Divisions of the Federal High Court in such areas including but not limited to constitutional law, taxation law, immigration law, maritime law, intellectual property law, banking law, securities and corporate law among others to attend to special needs of litigants.
The statement called for creation of more Divisions of the Federal High Court, especially in a jurisdiction like Lagos State , where there is only the Lagos Division based in Ikoyi in existence . The statement commended the aggressive completion being undertaken on the new Building for the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court and called for quick completion of same to put an end to the era of choked courtrooms that has always been the order of the day in the current Building.
The statement called for the resuscitation of the Ikeja Division and creation of Lekki Division (to be sited in Ibeju Lekki) , Ikorodu and Badagry to make the Federal High Court accessible to lawyers and litigants in these areas within Lagos State. The statement submitted that this call becomes apparent at the background of increasing litigation based on the centrality of Lagos State as the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria.
The statement observed the great need for engagement of more Judges to meet up with the bourgeoning rate of litigation across the country.
