Lagos Lawyer, Jimmy Abia advocates specialization for Senior Advocates

A lagos based lawyer, Jimmy Abia has advocated for the unbundling of the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SAN.

In a post he shared on social media, Mr Abia stated that “No one can be a jack of all, master of all. I think the idea of appointing persons as SAN(Senior Adovate of Nigeria) without specifying a particular field of law is outdated”

According to him, “some SAN hardly show mastery of law in more than a few areas”.

He wondered “Why then should someone be appointed an omnibus SAN? I think this is not helpful to the profession.”

“Even professors are appointed to specific areas of expertise. Medical consultants are appointed in specific areas. This helps anyone to know the areas each one may be called upon if needed….” He stated.

He advocated that specializations such as  SAN(Human Rights), SAN (Election Petition), SAN(Constitutional Law), SAN (Arbitration), SAN (Shipping Law), SAN (Aviation Law), SAN (Corporate Law Practise) etc should be created instead of a omnibus SAN that will be jack of all trade and master of none.

“This will also open the fields for more specialisation of lawyers and the appointment of more persons as SAN”.. he concluded.
