Hijab: I prayed to Allah not to give me 1st Class in Law School as i didn’t want to be celebrated “Naked” – Pro Hijab Lawyer narrates 2006 call to bar experience

A pro hijab activist and lawyer, Mutiat Toyosi Orolu, has narrated how she prayed to Allah not to have first class during the Law School Bar Final Exams in 2006 because she didn’t want to be naked in full public glare without her hijab.

In a social Media post celebrating three hijab adherent law school students that got 1st class in the bar finals exams, the activist explained that she made the bizarre prayer because in 2006, hijab adherents are not allowed to to wear the head scarf during call to bar ceremony. She equated appearing without her hijab to being “naked”.

The rule was however changed in 2017, when a bar aspirant, Firdaous Amasa refused to remove her head gear as it offends her faith.

I was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2006 after a rigorous training in law school.
I worked harder than I ever did in my life and prayed harder still.

However, I had one specific prayer “OH ALLAH! DO NOT LET ME HAVE A FIRST CLASS…. I WANT ONLY A 2:1”

I made this prayer not because I didn’t think Allah would grant it. I Made this prayer not because I didn’t work hard enough, or study enough! I made this prayer not because I didn’t think I was worth it !

But I only made this prayer because I know First Class in the Bar Finals means you will be celebrated!

You would probably be called on the last day of call, the camera of the newsmen would be on you, your pictures would be in the newspaper!

I didn’t want to be celebrated while I was naked! I didn’t want to be celebrated while I wasn’t wearing my Hijab! Hence my fervent prayer.

Alhamdulillah it was answered! I had a 2:1; didn’t want to invite family members to the ceremony. My mum and in-laws forced their way to celebrate me. I did very well but the joy of my day of call was snatched from me!

So today 13 years after I will celebrate!. For all of us who couldn’t. As three of my sisters ( and counting) bagged First Class in the Bar Finals; And will by Allah’s permission wear the Hijab for their call to bar ( may Allah bless you Firdaous Amasa).

We would stand together with our heads held up high, we would stand together in gratitude to Allah, that every Muslim girl and woman will not have to scale back her dua, just because she will be celebrated.
