Gender Balance: NBA have not had a female Lawyer as General Secretary in 35 years
Information available to BarristerNG shows that only one female lawyer has been elected as Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, General Secretary in the history of the Association.
Investigation shows that Mrs Hairat Balogun, who served the NBA as General Secretary from 1982 to 1984, is the only female lawyer to occupy the position till date.
This fact was raised by Mr Ike Augustine, an Owerri based legal practitioner who urged lawyers to balance the gender imbalance by electing a female lawyer, Joyce Oduah Esq as the general secretary during this year’s national leadership election of the Association.
“Since 1984, more than 15 male lawyers have served the NBA as General Secretaries but no female lawyer, so we should correct this gender imbalance in this year’s election” he stated.
Another male lawyer who spoke with BarristerNG on the condition of anonymity expressed shock that Federation of Female Lawyers, FIDA, has allowed the gender imbalance to fester for so long.
“The position of NBA General Secretary is so strategic in the Association that the constitution made zoning applicable to it to accommodate blocs within the NBA, so FIDA should have not allowed the gender imbalance to last this long, I hope they correct this in this year’s election” he stated.
Like NBA General Secretary position, Only one female lawyer has also been able to lead the NBA as president. Chief (Mrs.) Priscilla Olabori Aderonke Kuye is the First Female President of the Nigerian Bar Association, 1992.
Speaking in 2013 of her experience as NBA president, Chief (Mrs) Kuye stated that some members of the Association were so averse to her emergence as NBA President that she was physically attacked and nearly killed in PortHarcourt.
In this years NBA national election, all the presidential candidates are male lawyers and of the four candidates jostling for the General Secretary position, Mrs Joyce Oduah is the only female candidate.Call Bridget Edokwe Esq on 08060798767 or send your email to firstname.lastname@example.org
