#EndSARS: NBA Bwari Branch Secretariat Has Fallen – Branch Chairman laments
Tragedy struck at the Customary Court Complex, Dutse on Tuesday, 20th October, 2020 when the entire building was raised down by hoodlums/thugs who disguised as #ENDSARS Protesters in order to discredit the genuine intention of the protest.
In a statement on Wednesday the Chairman of the Branch, Clement Chukwuemeka, Esq described the yesterday’s incident as black Tuesday noting that similar gory incident took place across the country.
For the records, the said Customary Court Complex is also the Secretariat of NBA Bwari Branch and it is in the same Customary Court Complex that the NBA Bwari Branch holds its meetings.
The incident occurred at about 2:30pm while the Chairman of the Branch, Clement Chukwuemeka, Esq and his Excos were holding a very crucial meeting with FCT High Court CJ Hon. Justice Ishaq Bello) in his Chambers in Maitama, Abuja.
Information available to BarristerNG reveals that the hoodlums/thugs in their numbers invaded the Customary Court Complex along the Bwari expressway with dangerous weapons and maimed persons on sight, cars of the judges and litigants were vandalized and the entire court building set ablaze – even the Security post was not spared.
Eyewitness account revealed that it was as if the NBA Bwari Branch office in the building was particularly targeted by the hoodlums as nothing could be saved including office vital files/ stationaries , furniture including 100kva generator. The Admin Secretary was severely injured as he sustained machete cut in his neck. Other staff of the Customary Court ran for their dear lives as they watch the building burn before their eyes helplessly.
Part of the statement reads “Many have described Tuesday, 20th October, 2020 as a Black Tuesday – this is not far-fetched because similar gory incident took place across the country on the same Tuesday, 20th October, 2020 and the good citizens of Nigeria are still counting their losses.
“It is worrisome to us how a peaceful protest has suddenly turned violent. The said #ENDSARS protest had gone on for over 10 days without a single record of violence across the country. What then has happened? This is a clarion call for the government to investigate what went wrong and punish those involved.
“Nigerians have a right to be protected while on protest. This right is non-negotiable. It’s an inherent and a fundamental right of citizens enshrined under Chapter 4 of the Constitution which same constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria makes the protection of life and property of her citizens topmost priority.
“We call on Nigerians to remain calm and continue to speak in unison; this is not a time for us to be engulfed by religious or ethnic sentiments. The #ENDSARS protest is a metaphor of the rots/decay in our country today and this decay/rot cut across all tribes and religious group. No one can feign ignorance of this obvious fact glaring us in the face. The #ENDSARS Protest is NOT a call to remove President Buhari from power as it’s being bandied in some quarters, rather it’s a clarion call for the Buhari led government to sit up and work the talk as promised.
“We call on the President to address the irate youths now. It’s never too late to do so. This is not the time to play politics, for its beyond politics now. The problem before us is a very serious one that should not be treated with kids gloves!
“We also use this medium to call on highly spirited Nigerians, senior members of the Bar and National Body of NBA to come to the aid of NBA Bwari Branch (Capital Bar); We have fallen but shall rise again with your support; we have been beaten below the belt but shall remain resolute.
“It is disheartening to report that the inferno so engulfed did not spare any property of the Branch . We cannot recover from this shock in a hurry and we need to continue holding our meetings and rendering probono services to indigent members of the community and society at large.
“We use this medium to appreciate the General Secretary of NBA Joyce Oduah FICMC, My leaders Mazi Afam Osigwe , Dr. Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau, Mrs. Princess Chukwuani , Mrs Ozioma Izuora , Chief Henry O. Akunebu and many Bar leaders that have called in to support us and share in our grief at this trying time in the history of the branch.
“We remain dogged and hopeful in spite of all odds as we shall overcome,” he stated.
