End SARS Agitations: NBA Akure Branch Sets Up A Help Desk To Assist Victims Of Police Brutality -By Nike Omotayo
Following the recent #EndSARS #EndSWAT protest in Akure and neighbouring communities, the pronouncement by the Inspector General of Police dissolving the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and replacing same with the Special Weapons and Tactics with its accompanied gross abuse of human rights, the Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Akure Branch hereby adopts and reiterates the position of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Olumide Akpata on the NBA’s core mandate of promoting the Rule of Law in Nigeria, deepening its democratic space and making human and other resources available in enforcing the fundamental rights of Nigerians via a statement issued on 9th October 2020.
The Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Akure Branch in pursuance of its objectives under Article 10(6) of the Uniform Bye-Law is committed to promoting and protecting the principles of the rule of law, human rights and liberties, providing free legal aid services in suitable circumstances amongst others.
Against this background, the Human Rights Committee is consequently offering to render free legal representation to victims of police brutality and harassment; receive report of cases of police harassment for the protection and enforcement of fundamental human rights of members of the public .
The Human Rights Committee has also set up help desk lines to receive complaints and support to victims of police harrassment
