Did Supreme Court take hints from Aikpokpo Martins view?
It was a harsh view to some but a fair deal to many when a Former NBA Warri branch boss and an aspirant in the 2020 national officers Election, Mr. John Aikpokpo-Martins, on 25th February urged the Supreme court to not only dismiss applications for review but to award punitive fines on lawyers to the applicants.
He noted that the loss of the integrity of the Supreme Court will kill the nation.
Dismissing the applications, the Supreme court awarded the exact cost predicted by Mr. Aikpokpo-Martins on the applicants lawyers.
Consequently in another post Mr. Aikpokpo-Martins said;
“Yesterday, I made a statement on facebook calling on the Supreme Court to not only as a matter of deliberate action dismiss all the pending applications for review of her judgments, but to indeed impose punitive fines on the legal practitioners who filed the applications and crushing cost on the applicants.
“I am gladdened that the Supreme Court decision is in tandem with my humble suggestion. Below is excerpts from my statement entitled “ON THE REVIEW OF SUPREME COURT JUDGMENTS.
“But what is to be done?
I do believe that the national and common interest of the people must prevail where there seem to be a conflict with individual rights. Granted that some of the judgments do seem deserving of sympathetic considerations, but the damage that would have been done to our most sacred institution will be too great and irreversible for the review of such judgments to be entertained. The nation can not afford a broken and half clad Supreme Court, just to redress some perceived aggrieved politicians; whether they are right or wrong is of no moment.
The Supreme Court in the interest of the nation therefore should dismiss all the applications for review with punitive costs.
The applicants/parties should be fined not less than N30m each to be paid within a month, failing which the parties will be barred from participating in future election in the affected states.
Their lawyers should be fined not less than N10m each and same to be paid within 1 month, failing which they will be barred from practice until the fine is paid.
If any lawyer files for a review of the presidential election, such a lawyer should be barred from practice for 3 years without option of fine.”
I went further to say that “the loss of the integrity of the Supreme Court will kill the nation; make no mistake about that, and the biggest casualties will be the lawyers.”
I therefore congratulate the Supreme Court for doing the needful and for sending a very strong message to the political class that the Supreme Court will not be rubbished by mischief makers, and that the sanctity of her judgments remains sanctified. We still have reasons to be hopeful that all is not lost.”
In the light of the development at the Supreme court on Bayelsa, and knowing the influence Social Media have on society, lawyers have been wondering whether the supreme Court Lords read and agreed with Mr Aikpokpo-Martins view before it’s Judgement.
