Young Lawyer Recounts How Mazi Afam Osigwe Inspired Him and his Colleagues
THE AFAM OSIGWE I KNOW
I remember that it was in November 2012 that I arrived the Nigerian Law School as a stranger knowing nothing about how the Legal profession works. Having learnt all I needed to know of the substantive law, I was headed for another level of learning procedural law. I needed to be properly guided, inspired and convinced that I had chosen the right profession.
It was during the induction that we had several resource persons coming to address us. One of them stood out, he was a young man whose speech on that day inspired me. Afam Osigwe, was introduced to all of us at the Law School Auditorium by the then Head of Academics, Bob Osamor. Mr. Afam was then the Chairman of the Unity Bar.
We were all stricken by his youthful Vibrancy and his inspiring speech. He told us an inspiring story of how he came to Abuja like each of us and took the gauntlet to settle for the practice of law. I was inspired like many who listened to him with rapt attention, not just because of his speech and youthful vibrancy but because he spoke intelligently to our utter surprise. As young as he was, we knew he was an asset for the legal profession.
I met him again for the second time at the Government House Banquet Hall Yenagoa in 2014 at one of the NBA function organized by the NBA Yenagoa under the leadership of Dr. Okorodas. As a youth Corp member then, I was in pains as I had no PPA (Place of Primary Assignment) and the only one I had was an Insurance company where I was subjected to the position of a marketer. It was Afam Osigwe who again inspired me to make a complaint to the NBA. In order to encourage me he gave me his folder Containing all the materials for that function. I still have the folder till date. He told me to be focused and never allow the situation deter me. The rest is now history as I have now moved on in the profession. He motivating words led me to Late Mrs. Felicia Eimunjeze who brightened my path in the practice of law.
When I heard that Afam Osigwe will be contesting for the Post of the President in the next NBA election, I had no choice but to say he has my vote and I am sure that all of the 2013 Golden Jubilee Set of the Law School would say same for he inspired us to greatness through that his singular speech. I have equally seen his strides at the Unity Bar Branch and as the Akowe of the National body of the NBA.
Above all, I know him to be humble and friendly. He is a detribalised Nigerian who sees every one as his friend. He listens and encourages the young to grow. I am convinced that Mazi Afam Osigwe can take the NBA to the next level.
Thank you Mazi Afam Osigwe for the inspiration.
