Why My Governor deserves to continue for 4 more years By Adaze Emwanta Esq.
During the week I had the rare privilege of having a private discussion with Godwin Obaseki, the Executive Governor of Edo State. We had met for the first time, at the residence of Gen. Osaigbovo Ogbemudia in the build-up to the 2016 Edo governorship election. Then he explained his desire to improve the human capital development index of Edo, which was below average in most of the Local Government Areas he visited during the campaign. After he left, I had cause to disagree with my leader, Gen. Ogbemudia on his decision to support Obaseki. My reason was simple. I felt he was going to be a stooge of Adams Oshiomhole, who has an overbearing attitude towards educated and intelligent people in politics, who do not agree with him. I eventually supported his opponent, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, purely because of this reason.
In my discussion with the Governor this week he explained his purpose in politics and his interventions in putting Edo State on the world map, in terms of sustainable development. Sustainable development as I know It, is “development that caters for the needs of the present generation, without jeopardizing the interest of unborn generation. The EDOBEST programme, which earned my Governor the prestigious national award of excellence of the central body of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), has revolutionised public education at the basic level in Edo State. Edo has become a reference point to other States in this connection.
The “infrantry division”, (according to the APC national Chairman, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole), of the oligarchy that controlled the common patrimony of Edo before Godwin Obaseki came onboard, are unhappy. Who deserves to be happy in the scheme of things? The infantry division and their paymasters or the generality of Edo people? Food for thought!
My support for Godwin Obaseki in his re-election bid is total and non-negotiable. It is the greatest happiness of the greatest number, that Godwin Obaseki’s next four years offers. The first four years, which my four left fingers signposts, refers to the years given with the support of the minority “infantry division” who want to be in charge of CDAs and government revenue collection, because majority of hardworking Edo youths were despondentally apolitical. These next four years which my right four fingers represents is a determinant of the destiny of Edo State. The power of changing the age-old narrative belongs to God, who created the good people of Edo State. He has given us a freewill to change the things around us for our common good. We may not have a Godwin Obaseki in generations to come if we fail to rise up to this challenge.
Now is the time!
