NBA Speaks on indiscriminate use of NBA stickers
The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has reacted to the indiscriminate use of its logo and stickers by non lawyers and drivers.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Association, Kunle Edun decried the act as unlawful and urged every lawyer to join hand in protecting the integrity of the profession by reporting any misuse of NBA stickers.
Lawyers were alarmed when the “learned profession’s” sticker was sighted adorning the body of a commercial tricycle popularly know as “keke”
Below is the NBA reaction:
PROTECTING THE LEGAL PROFESSION IS EVERYONE’S JOB
The pictorial of a tricycle having an NBA sticker affixed on a tricycle has been seen in several platforms. Spirited efforts by us to trace the source of the picture with a view to identifying the registration details of the tricycle and the State it is registered has been largely unsuccessful. We would appreciate if anyone can avail us such information to enable the National Secretariat liaise with the appropriate branch Chairman.
However, the unlawful use of the NBA sticker has brought to fore the need for all legal practitioners to be involved in efforts at maintaining and protecting the dignity and integrity of the legal profession. The person (if he is a legal practitioner) that took the snapshot would have been more helpful if he had provided fuller details about the registration details of the tricycle and its location.
There are still many instances of abuse of the NBA sticker and we must put a stop to this trend. All the NBA branches are expected to assist in tackling this ugly trend aggressively. We note that in some branches NBA Car Sticker Anti-Abuse Committees are functional. The incidents of impersonation, of which this is one (particularly if the tricycle is not being driven by a lawyer) are also given deserved attention in some other branches. We urge all the branches to take this a notch higher by ensuring that all incidents of abuse of NBA Car stickers are reduced substantially.
As lawyers, we have the duty to report such abuse whenever it occurs to the Police for immediate arrest of the impersonator. The NBA President, Paul Usoro, SAN has promised to work with the branches Chairmen in evolving innovative measures to check this menace.
The NBA appreciates the concerns expressed by members and look forward to synergies like this.
