NBA Lekki Forum Agrees on Synergy with Area Commander, Area “J” on Security, Issues 7 Days’ Ultimatum to CBN Over Obnoxious Charges 

 

The Lekki Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association paid a Courtesy visit to the Area Commander of Area “J” Command(covering Lekki, Ajah, Epe) of the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police Force, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gbolahan M. Olugbemi on Thursday, 19th September, 2019. The delegation of the Lekki Forum led by Oladotun Hassan and Ayo Ademiluyi, Chairman and Secretary of the Lekki were well received by the Area Commander.

In his speech, the Area Commander called for synergy of the Bar, the Bench and the Nigerian Police Force to combat the rising tide of cases of cultism within the Area Command. He also raised the need to ameliorate low income neighbourhoods by the government. He formally invited the Lekki Forum to a Stakeholders’ Community Town Hall Meeting on 25th September, 2019 with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu at L’avenida Events Centre, Lake View Park 1, Beside Elenganza Shopping Complex , Opposite Ikota Shopping Complex, Ajah, Lagos State by 9: 30am prompt.

In his response, Mr. Oladotun Hassan raised the need for a NBA Lekki Forum/ Area “J” Area Command Joint Security Committee through which the Forum can assist the Area Command on security. He also raised the need to deepen criminal mediation and restorative justice approach in dealing with criminal cases .

The visit to the Area Commander ended on a resounding note as the officers of the Command and the delegation of the NBA Lekki Forum, which included civil society allies including but not limited to the Centre for Defence of Human Rights and Democracy in Africa led by Professor Maurice Fangnon took pictures. The letter of commendation of the Lekki Forum to the Area Commander was well received.

Thereafter, the Lekki Forum held her Emergency Expanded Executive Committee Meeting at her Secretariat at Suite 16, Amabec Plaza ,Beside the Lekki High Court Building, Addo Road, Ajah, Lagos State. The meeting had a Special Session on the State of the Nation which had representatives of the civil society in attendance , including but not limited to Centre for the Defence of Human Rights and Democracy in Africa led by Professor Maurice Fangnon. The Special Session on State of the Nation observed the imposition of obnoxious, wicked and evil charges by the Central Bank of Nigeria without consultation. The session condemned the charges and unanimously resolved to issue a 7-day ultimatum to the Central Bank of Nigeria , commencing today Thursday , 19th September, 2019 and lapsing Thursday , 26th September , 2019 for total reversal of the imposed charges for proper consultation to begin in earnest , failing which the Lekki Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association and other civil society groups under the aegis of the Anti-Impunity Coalition will conduct peaceful processions to the Lagos and Abuja offices of the Central Bank of Nigeria tagged “Occupy CBN”. The Session also agreed to initiate legal action against the obnoxious policy. The Session also observed the planned hike of Value Added Tax, nationwide implementation of charges in 2020 with neglect and refusal to pay N30, 000 minimum wage, fresh N2.5 billion naira World Bank loan , fresh devaluation of the Naira in December , 2019 and agreed to fortify the Anti- Impunity Coalition to resist the economic impunities.

The session accepted the offer of partnership with Amnesty International towards a Evicted Communities Restoration Project for forcefully evicted communities within and outside the jurisdiction of the Forum. The meeting agreed to work with Amnesty International and other interested non-governmental organisations on the project.

At the end of the Special Session on the State of the Nation, the representatives of the civil society groups took pictures with the leadership of the Lekki Forum led by Oladotun Hassan Esq. , the Chairman, Ajibike Oshodi Esq., the Vice -Chairman and Ayodele Ademiluyi , the Secretary after which they took their leave.

The Executive Committee-in- session agreed to fully participate in the High Court of Lagos State 2019/2020 New Legal Year commencing on Monday, 23rd September, 2019 with Services both at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina and Central Mosque, Lagos Island.

The meeting also accepted the appointment with the Deputy Director General of the Nigerian Law School , Lagos Campus on Monday, 23rd September, 2019 by 2pm to discuss among other issues collaboration towards “How to Succeed in Law School” initiative of the Lekki Forum.

The meeting agreed to participate in the Community Stakeholders’ Security Meeting with a delegation led by the Chairman, Oladotun Hassan Esq., the Criminal Justice Sector Summit at Lagos City Hall with a delegation led by Ms. Ajibike Oshodi, the Vice-Chairman and Nigerian Institute of Surveying Programme on Legal Reforms in Surveying Profession at Ikeja with a delegation led by Ayodele Ademiluyi Esq., the Secretary, with all events holding on Wednesday, 25th September, 2019.

The meeting also accepted the appointment with the Attorney General of Lagos State and Commissioner for Justice in first week of October, 2019 to push for collaboration of Lekki Forum with the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.

The meeting agreed to keep in view October 15 , 2019 Special Monthly Meeting
and Special Knowledge Sharing Seminar Series with Rule of Law Committee of the Section on Public Interest and Development Law of the Nigerian Bar Association.

The meeting agreed to fully participate in the Annual Conference of the Section on Public Interest and Development Law of the Nigerian Bar Association commencing from 5th to 9th November, 2019.
