International Women’s Day: “You are grossly endangered” NBA Scribe warns Women
The above is the theme of this year’s Intenational Women’s Day.
I had said at the NBA NEC Meeting Ilorin in response to the President’s address inter alia as follows:
*”It is only in Nigeria that the heinous act of terrorism, where over 200 Chibok school girls were abducted, can repeat itself in a similar fashion at Dapchi girls school. The girl child is in danger in this country. Nigeria has what it takes to give security to her citizens but our leaders have failed us. This failure is deliberate!”*
While we mark the International Women’s Day (IWD) today, all of us must spare a thought for the Nigerian girl child. She is a woman.
Imagine what those Chibok and Dapchi girls are passing through. They are raped. They are forced to become suicide bombers. They are enslaved. They are starved. They are subjected to all manner of unimaginable situations and treatment.
Spare a thought for their mothers and loved ones. They will live the rest of their lives with the pang of pains that their daughters are in the “lions’ den” where anything but good thing can happen to them. There are many other women whose abductions were not announced. Many are dying in silence.
We all must press for progress by lending our voices to the call to secure the girl child in Nigeria. We must task government and its agents to give maximum security to the girl child. We must brace up and vote out any regime that cannot guarantee the security of lives and properties of Nigerian especially the vulnerable woman and girl child. The task of eliminating all forms of violence and discrimination against women is task that must be accomplished in Nigeria.
At the level of NBA, we must begin to task ourselves, think out of the box and fashion out the best ways to use the law as an instrument of protest against insecurity in Nigeria. We owe the society that much and even more.
I urge Nigerian women to use the opportunity that will be provided at the forthcoming U.N. Convention on Status of Women (CSW) (March 12 to 21) at the US, to tell the world that the Nigerian woman and girl child are grossly endangered.
I salute Nigerian women!!!
Secretary NBA Nnewi Branch.
